Financing your first commercial truck: what to expect

For most businesses, buying a truck outright ties up cash that is better kept working. Financing spreads the cost so the truck can pay for itself as it earns. If it is your first time, here is what the process looks like and how to approach it well.
The deposit
Expect to put a portion of the price down up front. A larger deposit lowers your monthly payment and can improve the rate you are offered, so it is worth stretching a little if you can, but never to the point of leaving the business short of working capital.
The documents
Banks assess whether you can comfortably afford the repayments. Having your paperwork ready makes approval faster and smoother.
- Proof of identity (and business registration, if buying under a company)
- Recent bank statements or business records showing income
- Proof of address
Approval and terms
The bank confirms your rate and term, typically a fixed monthly payment over a set number of years. Match the term to how long the truck will realistically earn: too short strains cash flow, too long means paying interest on an ageing asset.
Put yourself in a strong position
- Know your numbers: what the truck will earn and what you can repay each month.
- Keep your records tidy; clean statements make lenders comfortable.
- Consider a trade-in to boost your deposit without extra cash.
